Despite a vast literature on momentum examining the patterns of momentum, the source of momentum returns,
and momentum crashes, it is still unclear why momentum exists and whether momentum returns are predictable.
This study calculates a measure called the “momentum gap” which estimates the dispersion of stocks’ cumulative
returns during a momentum portfolio's formation period and tests whether this measure can predict momentum
returns in the Korean stock market. Previous studies show that the momentum gap negatively predicts
momentum returns in the U.S. stock market and other developed countries' stock markets. The results of this
paper suggest that the momentum gap also negatively predicts momentum returns in the Korean stock market.
However, the predictive ability of the momentum gap is weaker in the Korean stock market than in the U.S. stock
market in that it fails to consistently predict momentum crashes or out-of-sample momentum returns.

모멘텀에 대한 많은 연구가 이어져 왔지만 명확한 설명 및 예측에 대한 의견이 분분하다. 이에
모멘텀 포트폴리오의 형성기간에서 계산되는 수익률의 차이인 모멘텀 갭이라는 측도를 만들고,
해당 측도가 모멘텀 수익률에 대한 예측 가능성을 갖는지 검증하였다. 미국 및 다른 선진국처럼
한국에서도 모멘텀 갭의 효과성은 유효했다. 모멘텀 갭이 모멘텀 수익률을 음의 방향으로
유의하게 예측함을 확인했다. 다만 표본 외 예측력과 모멘텀 붕괴 예측 부분에서 미국보다는 다소
약한 예측력을 갖는 것을 파악했다.
