This study analyzes the performance of volatility targeting strategy in Korean Market. The clustering of volatility and the negative correlation between realized volatility and returns are well-known characteristics of volatility. In a state of extreme volatility, clustering is stronger and negative correlation with returns becomes clearer. These characteristics are the main motivations of conditional volatility targeting that dynamically adjusts risk exposure in extremes during high and low volatility states. Conditional volatility targeting consistently enhances Sharpe ratios and reduces drawdowns and tail risks and it generates additional returns by reducing the maximum loss thorough appropriate risk exposure with a low turnover rate.
본 연구는 한국시장에서 변동성 조정 전략의 성과를 분석한다. 변동성의 군집화 및 수익률과 실현 변동성 간의 음의 상관관계는 잘 알려진 변동성의 특징이다. 변동성이 극단인 상태에서 군집 현상이 강하고 수익률과 음의 상관관계가 뚜렷해진다. 이러한 특징들은 변동성에 따라 시장 위험 노출을 동적으로 조정하는 조건부 변동성 조정 전략의 가장 큰 동기이다. 무조건적인 변동성 조정 전략보다 변동성이 극단 상태인 고 변동성과 저 변동성일때 조건부 조정 전략을 실시하게 된다면 지속적으로 샤프비율을 증가시키고 하락 및 꼬리위험 감소효과를 보인다. 또한, 조건부 변동성 조정 전략은 낮은 회전율로 적절한 위험노출을 통해 최대손실을 줄이며 추가적인 수익률을 창출 할 수 있다.
