Entrepreneurship is one of the key engines of economic growth and a big contributor to the creation of new jobs
and inventions. Hence, strategy and organizational scholars have explored various elements of entrepreneurial activity. The researchers, in particular, attempt to comprehend entrepreneurial activities by categorizing them into two major topics. First, scholars in the entrepreneurship field have long been interested in studying the entrepreneurial process, which involves individuals discovering and exploiting business possibilities. In this research theme, scholars tried to answer the question about who and when do individuals transition into entrepreneurs. Second, observed heterogeneity in start-up performance is a central topic in strategy and entrepreneurship study. Thus, the fundamental question in this area has been: why do certain start-ups outperform others? Who will be the successful business owners? This dissertation supplements these two research streams by focusing on two intriguing factors. The first essay study the relationship between entrepreneurial failure experience and the performance heterogeneity of startups. A previous study highlighted entrepreneurial failure as a potential factor explaining observed variations in startup performance. However, the extant literature rarely examines the specific mechanism for how entrepreneurial failure has associated with startup performance. Thus, the first essay focus on failed entrepreneurs' behavioral changes to explain the association between previous company failure experiences and start-up performance. The second essay investigated how the economic and social crisis caused by COVID-19 is related to the individual’s entrepreneurship decision. The unique characteristics of COVID-19, such as social distancing, Work-From-Home syndrome, and rapid adoption of automation technology, present novel theoretical points to examine how environmental changes influence entrepreneurial activity.
기업가정신은 경제성장의 핵심 엔진 중 하나이며 새로운 일자리와 발명품 창출에 큰 기여를 한다. 따라서, 전략과 조직학자들을 기업가 활동의 다양한 요소들을 탐구해왔다. 특히 이들 학자들은 기업가적 활동을 크게 2가지 주요 주제로 분류하여 이해하려고 하였다. 첫째, 기업가정신 분야의 학자들은 오랫동안 개인이 사업 가능성을 발견하고 이용하는 기업가적 과정을 연구하는 데 관심을 가져왔다. 이 연구 주제에서, 연구자들은 어떤 사람들이 언제 창업자가 되는지에 대한 주요 질문에 답하려고 노력했다. 둘째, 창업 성과에서 관찰된 이질성은 전략과 기업가정신 연구의 중심 주제이다. 따라서 이 분야의 근본적인 질문은 다음과 같다: 왜 특정 창업 기업이 다른 창업 기업에 비해 높은 성과를 보여주는가? 본 박사학위 논문에서는 2가지 흥미로운 현상에 초점을 맞추어 이 두 가지 연구 흐름을 보완한다. 먼저 첫번째 연구에서는 기업가적 실패 경험과 창업자의 행동 변화를 기반으로 창업 기업의 성과 이질성을 설명하였다. 이전 연구에서는 창업 실패가 창업 기업의 성과 차이를 이해하는 잠재적인 요소라고 주장하였다. 그러나 창업 실패와 창업 기업의 성과 창출 사이의 연결고리를 설명하는 메커니즘은에 대한 연구는 부족하였다. 따라서, 첫 번째 연구에서는 이전의 회사 실패 경험과 창업 성과 사이의 연관성을 설명하기 위해 실패한 기업가의 행동 변화에 초점을 맞춘다. 둘째, 두번째 연구는 최근의 환경 변화에 집중함으로써, 새로운 사업 형성의 결정요인을 입증한다. 이 연구에서는 경제 및 사회적 위기가 개인의 기업가 활동과 어떻게 관련이 있는지 이해하기 위해 COVID-19 전후로 창업률의 변화를 조사하였다. 특히, COVID-19이 가지는 고유한 특성(예를 들어 사회적 거리두기, 원격 업무, 그리고 자동화 기술의 빠른 채택)은 환경 변화와 기업가 활동 사이의 관계를 이해하기 위한 새로운 이론적 점을 제시한다.
