Single-walled carbon nanotubes have been utilized as a saturable absorber due to its nonlinear property of absorption decrease for increased incident optical intensity. Among the semiconducting carbon nanotubes being frequently applied as saturable absorbers, the film type carbon nanotube polymer composite has been the representative as it can be produced at ease and shows superior performance. Despite the advantages, the polymer is highly vulnerable to thermal degradation, limiting its usage in long term operations. Although various attempts have been made to improve its thermal durability, there has been no quantitative analysis of the polymer. This thesis proposes a method of ultrasonicating carbon nanotubes for individualization and partial functionalization to uniformly distribute it within the polymer and a quantitative evaluation of it has been performed. A saturable absorber mode-locked fiber laser has been built based on the thermal degradation-resistant carbon nanotube polymer composite as a saturable absorber and has been utilized as a source for a two-photon excited fluorescence light source.
