In daily life, emotional processing usually occurs unconsciously and automatically and it has an influence on ongoing attentional processing. Although emotional processing plays a role of a facilitator or distractor for main attentional processing, direction of its influence is complex and controversial. In this study, specific types of emotional stimuli were selected via galvanic skin response (GSR) and event-related potential (ERP) during implicit emotional processing. Moreover, we tried to find how implicit emotional processing will have effects on attentional processing in terms of individual differences. To induce implicit emotional processing, the emotional picture was presented briefly (80ms) immediately before every trial of an attention task where reaction time (RT) was measured. There were five kinds of emotional conditions (neutral, positive, erotic, mutilation, and horror), and EEG and GSR were recorded during the whole task period. We found increased GSR in the horror condition and increased P300 and late positive potential (LPP) amplitude in the erotic and horror conditions. Further, participants were divided into two groups depending on whether RT in these conditions was faster or slower than that in the neutral condition. Divided participants who did not show emotional effects on ERP responses in each emotional condition showed faster RT in the erotic condition and slower RT in the horror condition. However, participants whose P300 amplitude increased showed slower RT in the erotic condition, but participants whose both P300 and LPP amplitudes increased showed faster RT in the horror condition. Finally, in these emotional conditions, it was possible to predict emotional effect on RT via machine learning using multimodal features including GSR and ERP. According to previous studies, it seems that pleasant emotion has positive effects and unpleasant emotion has negative effects on attentional processing. In this study, furthermore, we found that emotional effects on attentional processing could be opposite in the pleasant and unpleasant condition when participants significantly captured emotional significance (P300) or regulated their emotion (LPP).
일상에서 정서 처리는 무의식적으로 그리고 자동적으로 일어나며 이는 또한 진행중인 주의집중에 영향을 미친다. 정서 처리는 본 주의집중에 있어 촉진제로 때로는 방해물로 영향을 미치지만, 구체적인 영향의 방향성은 아직 분명하게 밝혀지지 않았다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 종류의 정서 자극에 대한 내현적 정서 처리 중 사건 관련 전위와 피부 전도도 반응을 유발하는 자극을 선별하였다. 그리고 개인차 관점에서 내현적 정서 처리가 어떻게 주의 집중에 영향을 미치는지 확인하고자 하였다. 내현적 정서 처리를 유도하기 위해, 참여자들의 반응속도가 기록되는 주의 집중 과제를 매회 진행하기 직전에 정서 유발 사진을 아주 짧은 시간(80ms) 동안 제시하였다. 총 5종류의 정서 자극(중립, 긍정, 섹슈얼, 잔인, 공포) 조건이 존재하였으며, 뇌파와 피부전도도는 과제 진행 내내 측정되었다. 이 중 섹슈얼과 공포 조건에 대하여 피부 전도도, P300, late positive potential (LPP)가 중립 조건에 비해 높아지는 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 나아가, 두 조건에서 주의 집중 과제 내 반응속도가 중립 조건에 비해 빨라지는지 혹은 느려지는지를 기준으로 참여자들을 각각의 조건에서 두 그룹으로 나누었다. 유의미한 사건 전위의 변화를 보이지 않은 참여자들의 경우, 섹슈얼 조건에서는 반응속도가 빨라졌으며 공포 조건에서는 반응속도가 느려졌다. 하지만 섹슈얼 조건에서 P300이 높아진 참여자들은 반응속도가 느려졌으며, 공포 조건에서 P300과 LPP가 높아진 참여자들은 반응속도가 빨라졌다. 마지막으로, 피부 전도도와 사건 관련 전위를 이용하는 기계 학습을 통해 섹슈얼과 공포 조건이 반응속도에 미치는 영향을 예측할 수 있었다. 기존 연구에 의하면, 긍적적인 정서는 주의 집중에 긍정적인 영향을 부정적인 정서는 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 보여진다. 하지만 본 연구에서는 정서적 중요성을 파악하는 정도(P300)와 정서 조절 정도(LPP)가 유의미하게 신경 반응을 통해 나타날 경우, 위 영향의 방향은 바뀔 수 있다는 것을 발견하였다.
