This study is based on the Nelson-Siegel model, which includes macroeconomic and financial stress factors rather than models using only potential factors (level, slope, and curves) in the 95% and 99% Value at Risk(VaR). The impact of macroeconomic and financial stress contain significant information about enhancing the VaR forecasting ability of the bond portfolio. We measure 95% and 99% value at risk for three bond portfolios (KODEX 3Year South Korea Treasury Bond, S & P South Korea Bond Index Total Return and KAP BARBELL INDEX) from January 2016 to December 2017. The fit of each model is determined using statistical test method of Christoffersen (1998). As a result, we could get a statistical validation that the value at risk prediction of the model reflecting the macroeconomic and financial stress factors is more accurate than the VaR of the bond portfolio using only the potential factors of the Nelson-Siegel model. Finding shows that the macroeconomic and financial stress effects have significant information that improves the forecasting power of VaR of the bond portfolios.
