Many young adults face mental disorder risk. Especially in Korea, mental disorders such as depression have become the main cause of the high suicide rate among young adults and therefore have become serious social problems. Besides costs related to depression have been increased rapidly and many young adults hesitate to visit psychiatrists due to the perceived stigma. Therefore cost-effective and non-clinical ways of intervention to help depressed young adults are needed. In this study, we conducted intervention experiment to identify the effects of expressive writing, which has beneficial mental health targeting young adults, who have depressive symptoms in KAIST, a large university in Korea. For a two-week, participants were required to write about what they experienced and how they felt through that events. After the experiment, we identified that 1) use of negative emotional words and cognitive words were associated with reduction of depressive symptoms and 2) participants who used many emotional words in their Facebook posting reported higher reduction in depressive symptoms.
Results implicate that 1) expressive writing is effective way to reduce depressive symptoms even online platforms, 2) revealing negative affect help people reduce their depressive moods and 3) expressive writing is more effective for people who are familiar with expressing their emotion in Facebook. Through the study, we identified that previous Facebook activities could affect to the effects of expressive writing. In this paper, we also suggest several design implications for the service, which support emotional help.
