Fast Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) characteristics of $NO_x$ by $NH_3$ over different catalysts (supported/unsupported) has been determined in a fixed bed and a dual bubbling fluidized bed reactor. The experiments were carried out with the simulated feed gas having the same composition as of the power plant in “Korea” and it contains about 8% water, 10% oxygen concentration and nearly 150 ppm NO but some experiments were also performed by varying concentrations of oxygen, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide in the feed gas. Among all the catalysts tested, $Co_3O_4$ based catalysts are seemed to be the most active ones for both NO oxidation and $NO_x$ reductions even at high space velocity (SV) and at low temperature in the fast SCR process. Over $Co_3O_4$ catalyst for NO oxidation, the effects of calcination temperatures, $SO_2$ concentration, optimum SV for 50% conversion of NO to $NO_2$ were determined. In the presence of $SO_2$ , the Pt based promoted catalysts found to be less affected but $Co_3O_4$ exhibited adversely. These Pt based catalysts were also tested for different concentrations of oxygen, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. On treating these catalysts with different $O_2$ concentration it is seen that the conversion of NO to $NO_2$ increases with increasing $O_2$ concentration from 3 to 12%, but it levels off at higher concentrations due to the saturation effect of $O_2$ concentration on the active site. The conversion to $NO_2$ decreases with increasing feed concentration of NO and also decreases by the addition of $NO_2$ to the feed. These both observations suggest that oxidation of NO on Pt based catalysts is auto-inhibited by the reaction product $NO_2$.
Among the different calcination temperatures, $Co_3O_4$ exhibits the maximum NO conversion at 300℃. The NO conversion decreases with increasing calcination temperature due to sintering. NO conversion decreases with increasing SV and the optimum SV for 50% NO conversion is found to be 238,000 $h^{-1}$ (0.21g).
Similarly, for $DeNO_x$ conversion, $Co_3O_4$ based catalysts ( $Co_3O_4-WO_3$ ) exhibits significantly higher conversion than all the developed catalysts (supported/unsupported) having maximum conversion of $NO_x$ even at lower temperature and at higher SV since the mixed oxide Co-W nano-composite is formed. Further experiments were performed to determine the effect of $SO_2$ concentration on $N_2O$ formation and $NH_3$ slip. In case of the fast SCR, $N_2 O$ formation and the amount of $NH_3$ slip over $Co_3O_4-WO_3$ catalyst are far less than that over the other catalysts but the standard SCR produces high concentration of $N_2O$ as well as $NH_3$ slip over all the tested catalysts. The effect of $SO_2$ concentration on $NO_x$ reduction is found to be almost negligible due to the presence of $WO_3$ that may resist $SO_2$ oxidation and also it increases $NH_3$ adsorption on bronsted acid site of the catalysts.
As $Co_3O_4$ catalysts were found to be effective catalysts for both NO oxidation and $NO_x$ reduction catalysts hence these catalysts were used for the same reactions in dual bubbling fluidized bed reactors which is designed for hybrid fast SCR process (simultaneous NO oxidation and $DeNO_x$ reaction). Both cold bed and hot bed experiments have been performed and the effects of gas velocity ( $U_g$ ), bed height (h), $NH_3$ concentrations, [NO]/[ $NO_x$ ] ratio and different temperature on minimum fluidization velocity ( $U_{mf}$ ), gas hold up ( $ε_g$ ), bubble size ($d_b$), bubble fraction (δ) and the most importantly, NO oxidation and $DeNO_x$ conversions have been determined. With the increase of $U_g$ , $d_b$ and δ increase due to the coalescence of smaller bubbles but at the same height from the distributor (z) and at a given $U_g$ , db decreases with increasing the L/D ratio. With increasing temperature, $U_{mf}$ was found to be decreased due to the change in gas density ( $ρ_g$ ) and viscosity ( $μ_g$ ). The optimum L/D ratio for both reactors was found to be 1.5. Increase in $U_g$ causes a decrease in NO oxidation and the $DeNO_x$ conversion due to the formation of bubbles and hence causes an increase in $NH_3$ slip. Further, increase in $NH_3$ concentration causes an increase in $DeNO_x$ conversion.
Finally a model has been developed for the fast SCR process for the dual bubbling fluidized bed using the Maple 10 and MATLAB 7.0.3. This model contains seven reaction steps including: $NH_3$ adsorption and desorption, $NH_3$ oxidation, NO oxidation, standard SCR, fast SCR, low SCR and $N_2O$ formation. The model describes all the experiments well and also it fits all the parameters involved in these reactions.
