Metal oxide catalysts have received a lot of interest as a low-cost alternative to precious metal catalyst because they exhibit high activity in various catalytic oxidations due to their excellent surface redox properties on the surface. However, under actual exhaust gas conditions including carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and water vapor, their intrinsic activity is greatly degraded due to competitive adsorption between carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and poisoning by water on the surface of the catalyst. Therefore, for practical application of the metal oxide catalyst, it is important to design the catalyst to have high activity for catalytic oxidations of both carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons under actual exhaust gas conditions. In this study, doping different kinds of metals into metal oxide surface significantly promoted the catalytic activity by changing the geometric and electronic properties. By controlling the active sites and oxygen properties on the metal oxide surface through various metal doping strategies, the performance of the metal oxide catalyst was greatly improved.
