With the advent of large-scale data and the concurrent development of robust scientific tools with which to analyze them, important discoveries are being made in a wider range of scientific disciplines than ever before. Research fields that have gained substantial attention recently include the analytical, large-scale study of human behavior, where many analytical and statistical techniques are applied to various behavioral data from online social media, markets, and mobile communication, enabling meaningful strides in understanding the complex patterns of humans and their social actions. The importance of such research originates from the social nature of humans, an essential human nature that clearly needs to be understood to ultimately understand ourselves. Another ubiquitous essential human nature is that they are creative beings, continually expressing inspirations or emotions in various physical forms such as picture, sound, and writing. As we are successfully probing the social behaviors of humans through science and novel data, it appears increasingly necessary and enlightening to pursue an understanding of the creative nature of humans in an analogous way. Painting, specifically, has played a major role in human expression and creativity. A symbolic process that precedes writing, painting has developed subject to an interplay involving representational conventions and social processes. Our study represents an effort to understand such interactive process by analyzing large-scale digital scans of paintings via a scientific and statistical methodology for quantitatively characterizing the organizing principles of paintings.
최근 대규모 데이터의 출현과 이를 분석 할 수 있는 강력한 과학적 도구들의 발전으로 인해 전통적인 자연과학의 범주를 확장하여 인문·예술 분야에 이르기까지 광범위한 분야에서의 중요한 과학적 발견이 이루어지고 있다. 특별히 인간 행동에 대한 정량적 분석 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있는데, 온라인 소셜 미디어, 시장 경제, 이동 통신 데이터 등 복잡한 인간 행동 패턴에 숨겨진 법칙에 관한 의미있는 발견이 급격히 이루어 지고 있다. 이같은 인간의 사회적 본성은 궁극적으로 우리 자신을 이해하기 위해 명확하게 이해해야하는 인간의 본질적인 특성으로서 그 중요성을 가진다. 또 다른 공통적인 인간 본성 중 하나는 그들이 미술, 음악, 문학과 같은 다양한 물리적 형태로 지속적으로 영감이나 감정을 표현하는 창의적 존재라는 점이다. 따라서 인간의 사회적 행동을 성공적으로 이해해 나가고 있음과 동시에 그와 유사한 방식으로 인간의 창의적 본성에 관한 이해를 가져야 할 필요성이 점점 대두되고 있다. 특히 인류 역사 속에서 글쓰기에 선행하는 상징적 과정인 회화는 인간의 창의적 표현에 중요한 역할을 지니며 시대별 표현양식의 관습과 과학적 개념, 기술적 진보와 함께 상호 작용을 통해 발전해 왔다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 상호작용 속에서 발전해 온 회화 속 작품 양식과 구성 원리를 정량적으로 특징짓고 규명하기 위한 통계물리학과 복잡계 과학론적 방법론을 제시하고 이를 서양미술사 속 대규모 예술 데이터에 적용하여 창의적인 표현의 변화과정을 체계적으로 살펴본 결과들을 소개하고자 한다.
