For improving speech intelligibility, various methods have been proposed to suppress reverberation of a room, which distorts the time and spectral characteristics of a speech signal. An absorption treatment on interior walls is effective for reducing the reverberation, but it requires a large area in the case of the live room with significant reverberation. In this study, a method, which defines the minimum requirement of absorption coefficient and selects the most effective wall, is proposed for the absorption treatment to satisfy the desired speech intelligibility. For this purpose, a microphone array beamforming is used because the directivity of the received sound causes different absorption characteristics of each wall. The absorption importance factor is defined by using the collision number of reflected sound on each wall and can estimate how much the speech signal is enhanced by the absorption treatment. For the validation, a test room with a size of 107 m$^3$, which has a reverberation time of 1.1 s, is selected for a simulation. The absorption importance factor predicts that the modified clarity for 500 and 1000 Hz (C50$^'_{500}$ and C50$^'_{1k}$) is improved 5.1 dB and 4.8 dB respectively and speech transmission index (STI) is enhanced 0.06 when the Helmholtz absorber is treated on the wall with the largest importance factor. The difference between the predicted and the calculated speech enhancement by using numerical simulation is less than the just-noticeable difference (JND) of each performance index. It is found that the absorption coefficient is required at least 0.6 to improve speech intelligibility more than 2JND. The subjective test is carried out to verify the enhancement of speech intelligibility by evaluating the overall clarity and speech intelligibility. The result shows that the absorption treatment on the most important wall improves the speech intelligibility to an almost similar level achieved by the absorption treatment on all walls. Therefore, the absorption treatment on the wall with the largest importance factor has an advantage in cost-effectiveness.
