The influences of methane/hydrogen blends on local/global flame structures, self-sustained combustion instabilities, and nitrogen oxides/carbon monoxide emissions were experimentally studied in a laboratory-scale lean-premixed gas turbine combustor. To deal with a wide range of variable methane/hydrogen mixtures including pure hydrogen, a mesoscale multi-nozzle array with sixty identical swirl injectors was considered with a particular emphasis on the major differences between uniform blending and fuel split (fuel staging) conditions for a constant adiabatic flame temperature of 1881 K. Under uniformly blended conditions, mesoscale multinozzle flames tends to trigger higher longitudinal eigenmodes with increasing hydrogen mole fractions up to 75%, while the relationship between the pressure amplitude and hydrogen mole fraction is observed to be highly nonlinear. Phase-resolved OH PLIF and OH* chemiluminescence imaging measurements indicate that there exists a clear alteration from a large-scale collective movement of mesoscale sixty flame ensemble (X$_{H2}$ = 0%) to compact individual flame movements without strong interactions between adjacent flames (X$_{H2}$ = 75%). Moreover, emissions measurements show clearly that the nitrogen oxides emissions remain relatively unchanged at approximately 1.5 ppmvd due presumably to the constant adiabatic flame temperature, whereas CO and CO$_2$ emissions are dramatically reduced with increasing hydrogen mole fractions.
For the 50% hydrogen enrichment cases, we carefully examined the potential impact of radial staging of the two different fuels by separating the inlet fuel passages, meaning that all hydrogen fuels are injected into the inner stages and all methane fuels are supplied to the outer fuel nozzles. In contrast to the synchronous oscillations of uniformly blended methane/hydrogen flames, the global dynamics of the mesoscale multinozzle flames are remarkably affected by local flame dynamics of inner- and outer-stage flame ensembles depending on operating conditions. As a result, the use of fuel split causes the instability frequency and pressure amplitude to be markedly varied relative to the corresponding uniformly blended condition. Here, we demonstrate that complete de-synchronization of global heat release rate fluctuations can be achieved by manipulating the local flame dynamics, more precisely, through the mechanism of phase cancellation. This result suggests that fuel staging can be utilized as a useful method to control combustion instabilities in fuel-flexible gas turbines capable of burning hydrogen/methane gas blends containing high hydrogen fuels.
