"Embarrassing apps" are apps the users do not want to disclose themselves as users because of the negative impression it may portray (e.g., dating apps, counseling apps). The study targets to alleviate the user’s discomfort when messaging in public spaces via “embarrassing app”. We propose an approach of camouflaging the chat screen of the app into a widely used messaging app UI. “IMception” is a system which supports the camouflaging on Android OS.“ Two requirements were set to implement IMception: 1) to work without “embarrassing app” developer’s support and 2) operate on unmodified Android OS. In the Android UI system, however, it is difficult to change the app UI while satisfying both requirements. We propose“Displaying self-made deceptive UI” to deal with such difficulties. We evaluated the effect of IMception in two aspects: 1) the lessened discomfort of “embarrassing app” user, 2) the change in the level of concerns on the potential embarrassment as perceived by the nearby people. The results indicate that the users preferred to use IMception rather than relying on current practices.
“민망한 앱”은 앱의 일부 부정적인 이미지 때문에 자신이 사용하는 앱임에도 앱 사용자라는 사실을 지인들에게 들키고 싶지 않은 앱을 의미한다 (예: 데이팅 앱, 상담 앱). 본 연구는 민망한 앱의 사용자가 채팅기능을 공공장소에서도 주변 시선의 부담에서 벗어나 편안하게 사용할 수 있도록 하고자 했다. 이에 대한 방안으로는 앱의 채팅 화면을 대중적인 채팅 앱의 생김새로 변환하는 방식을 활용했다. 이를 제공하는 시스템 구현에 있어서는 민망한 앱 개발자의 지원을 받지 않고 구현할 수 있도록 하는 것과 상용하는 안드로이드 운영체제에서 동작하는 것을 요구사항으로 설정했다. 이러한 요구사항을 만족하면서 앱의 사용자 인터페이스를 변환하는 것은 어렵다. 별도의 “눈속임 사용자 인터페이스” 구성 방식을 통해 실제로 앱의 사용자 인터페이스가 변환되지는 않지만, 변환된 것 같은 효과를 줌으로써 이를 다루었다. 실험에서는 민망한 앱 사용자가 IMception을 사용할 때의 불안감 저하 효과와, 주위 사람들에게 비춰지는 자신의 모습에 대해 안심하는 정도에 변화가 있는지를 관찰하고자 하였다. 그 결과 IMception을 사용하는 방식이 민망한 앱의 사용자가 기존에 사용하는 방식들보다 더 선호됨을 알 수 있었다.
