In line with the growing awareness of eco-friendly mobility, more and more global automakers are making efforts to expand sales of electric vehicles (hereafter “EV”). Nevertheless, current EV sales heavily rely on governmental subsidies and, what’s worse, its sales figures are much lower than those of internal combustion engine vehicles (hereafter “ICE”). This study suggests 'battery replacement program' as a new business model to tackle the issues of sluggish sales of EV sales from the perspective of total cost of ownership (hereafter “TCO”). Through the program, it proves that the TCO of EV can be cheaper than that of ICE, and analyzes that EV manufacturers can generate new profits and secure economic feasibility by entering the energy storage system (hereafter “ESS”) industry. Through the decision-making methodologies used during this economic analysis, it proves that implementation of battery replacement programs is the optimal decision result, and analyzes the sensitivity of uncertainty variables such as sales of EV, battery prices, and maturity of ESS markets. I hope the findings from this research will serve as an opportunity to strengthen the eco-friendly ecosystem by creating synergy between the EV and the ESS business in the future.
