It has been well established that equity’s volatility and its return are negatively correlated. This negative relationship also extends to implied volatility by many authors. This paper employs linear and non-linear models to understand movements of implied volatility. Applying minimum variance delta to KOSPI200 option data, this paper derives negative correlation between KOSPI200 index return and change in implied volatility and then, shows this negative relationship can be differentiated by the range of KOSPI200 returns. This paper uses daily data of KOSPI200 options to derive relationship between change in implied volatility and three factors which are Black-Scholes delta, annualized time to maturity and percent change of KOSPI200 index level. Three-factor neural network model improves the gain measured by mean of squared errors by 23% compared to the analytic model proposed by Hull and White(2017) and also shows the differentiated negative relationship. With an additional factor, lag one data of change in implied volatility, four-factor neural network model further improves the gain by 48% and shows the mean reversion feature of implied volatility movements.
