As wireless communications and their related applications progress rapidly and consistently, the transmission capacity of mobile communication systems keeps increasing in an exponential manner. Mobile communication systems have accommodated the traffic demands for decades by increasing the carrier frequency, and thus it is expected that millimeter waves in the range of a couple of hundred GHz would be employed for the next-generation wireless cellular system. However, it is extremely challenging to generate high-power wireless signals operating at 100~300 GHz frequency. Also, the wireless signals operating at such frequencies suffer from high attenuation when propagate over the wireless channel. A technical alternative to millimeter or sub-terahertz wireless communications is to utilize the free-space optical communication (FSOC), which exploits visible or infrared light as a carrier. Major merits of this technology include (1) it takes advantage of (well-developed) fiber-optic transmission technology, (2) it is easy to generate high-power (e.g., >100 mW), high-speed (e.g., >100 Gb/s) signals, and (3) the channel loss can be as low as <0.2 dB/km. Fixed point-to-point FSOC systems are already commercially available and are used for areas where fiber deployment is arduous or expensive, and the rapid link deployment is required. Despite a lot of research and development activities related to fixed FSOC systems, there is no research articles about mobile FSOC technology for wireless cellular networks. Unlike fixed FSOC systems, the FSOC systems for wireless cellular systems would (1) suffer from the solar radiation, (2) require a pointing, acquisition, and tracking subsystem (for the alignment between the transmitter and receiver) having small size, weight, and power, and (3) have difficulty securing the line of sight (LoS) between the transmitter and receiver, especially in urban environments.
In this dissertation, we study the impact of solar radiation on the performance of mobile FSOC systems. We also evaluate the link availability of mobile FSOC system in urban environments, estimated from the probability of securing the LoS. Finally, we propose to improve the link availability by using a reflector.
First, we evaluate the receiver sensitivity penalty induced by solar radiation for 1550-nm optically pre-amplified receiver, 780-nm avalanche photo-detector receiver, and 1550-nm coherent homodyne receiver through theoretical analysis. We find out that the solar radiation directly impinging on the receiver degrades the receiver sensitivity by more than 30 dB, regardless of the receiver type. This implies that the direct solar radiation disrupts the mobile FSOC system. Since the performance improvement brought by using narrow optical filtering and polarizer (in the presence of direct solar radiation) is marginal, we next calculate the probability of solar conjunction (which occurs when the sun is located on the extended line connecting the transmitter and receiver). We assume that the transmitter and receiver are located on the latitude of 37 degree (which corresponds to latitude of South Korea) and the receiver’s field of view (FoV) is 5.8 degree. The results show that the maximum solar conjunction occurs in summer solstice, but the probability of solar conjunction is merely 0.4% even in this worst case scenario. This probability also tends to decrease as the FoV of the receiver gets narrow.
We next evaluate the link availability of mobile FSOC system governed by the availability of LoS in urban environments. For this purpose, we define a city composed of buildings and streets placed on a grid structure and randomly distribute the buildings within blocks. Our theoretical and simulation results show that the link availability exhibits a periodicity determined by the block size, but the availability decreases as the link distance increases. In particular, the link availability drops rapidly as the link distance is longer than the block size. Also, we find out that the transmitter height is the most critical factor affecting the link availability. Lastly, we propose to utilize the vertical walls of buildings as a reflector to provide alternative LoS routes in urban environments. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is analyzed through computer simulation. The results show that the proposed scheme improves the link availability as the transmitter height is higher than the average height of the surrounding buildings. For example, the link availability is improved from 42% to 60% at 173 m horizontal link distance with 1.5 m height from base station with 80-m height. Even though our findings are derived from an ideal situation where the atmospheric absorption and turbulence are negligible, we believe that it could provide an important design guideline of future research on mobile FSOC technology for wireless cellular systems.
