The name of a country can provide one with various images related to the country, such as its natural scenery or buildings viewed directly or indirectly through the media. However, it is not easy to objectify and quantify the image of each country as a perception, considering that the image of the country itself is a complex product that combines the individuality of each experience with information from various fields. In this context, these limitations were overcome by extracting the average characteristics of images related to a country from images found in connection with the name of a country from the numerous data accumulated on the Internet. By looking into the image of a country recognized by a huge information network, the world wide web, the objective image characteristics of that country were quantitatively defined by utilizing the color distribution calculated from the images searched on a search engine. The applicability of the methodology to study future society was verified by analyzing the relationships with economic, environmental, cultural, social and political factors assumed to have the greatest influence on the formation of national image among the drivers of future society change.
특정 국가의 이름을 듣게 되면 그 국가의 자연 경관이나 건물 등 본인이 직접 혹은 미디어를 통해 간접적으로 바라본 그 국가와 관련된 다양한 이미지를 머릿속에 그린다. 그러나 국가의 이미지 자체가 각자 경험의 개별성과 다양한 분야의 정보가 결합된 복잡한 산물인 점을 고려시 사람들의 인식 속에 있는 국가별 이미지를 객관화하고 정량화하기는 쉽지 않다. 이러한 맥락에서 인터넷상에 축적되어 있는 수많은 데이터에서 특정 국가의 이름과 연관되어 찾아지는 이미지들로부터 해당 국가와 관련된 이미지들에 대한 평균적인 특징을 추출하여 그 한계를 극복하였다. 인터넷이라는 거대한 정보 네트워크가 인식하고 있는 국가의 이미지를 들여다봄으로써 해당 국가의 객관화된 이미지적 특징을 인터넷에서 검색된 이미지로부터 계산된 색채 분포를 활용하여 정량적으로 국가이미지의 특징을 정의하였다. 미래사회 변화 동인 중 국가이미지를 형성하는데 가장 많은 영향을 준 것으로 가정한 경제, 환경, 문화, 사회, 정치적 요소들과의 관계를 분석하여 미래사회를 연구하는 방법으로의 적용 가능성을 검증하였다.
