Visuo-motor transformation is one of the most important function for goal-directed behaviors such as predatory hunting in animals. Superior colliculus (SC) has been known to be a critical brain region for hunting by mediating eye and head orientation, but the underlying circuit network and functional mechanism are remained unclear. Here we find the retinotopically differentiated input and output circuit organization of the SC controls the head direction for adjusting a target prey to be in the center of the visual field. We also find the visual components of the object which can elicit hunting-like approaching and chasing by introducing virtual chamber system. The findings explain how the visual circuit organization guides the head direction for successful hunting, and which visual components trigger those goal-directed behavior.
동물의 시각-운동 변환 기능은 사냥행동과 같은 목표 지향 행동을 위해 가장 중요한 기능 중 하나이다. 상구는 이러한 사냥행동에 있어서 눈과 머리 방향을 조절하는 필수적인 뇌 부위로 알려져 있었지만 어떠한 뇌 신경회로를 통해 조절되는지, 이를 위한 기능적 작동 기작은 무엇인지 연구가 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구에서 망막위상적으로 분리된 상구의 신경 구조가 목표 먹이를 시야 중심에 놓기 위해 머리 방향을 조절한다는 것을 밝혀내었다. 또한 본 연구에서는 가상 자극 환경을 이용함으로써 사냥 행동을 유도하는 시각적 요소를 찾아내었다. 이러한 발견들은 어떻게 시각 회로 구조가 머리 방향을 조절하여 성공적인 사냥행동을 일으키는지, 어떤 시각 요소가 이러한 목표 지향 행동을 유발하는지를 설명한다.
