This dissertation consists of three essays on religion and finance. The first chapter presents the influences of religion on the financial development and structure of a country. In a sample of 46 countries between 1996 and 2015, we find that religiosity fosters financial development and a market-based financial structure, whereas religious hierarchy and moderate religious heterogeneity induce financial underdevelopment and a bank-based structure. Furthermore, these religious effects are more pronounced for countries with a weaker contractual environment, supporting the ameliorating role of social trust in a contractual environment. Overall, our study provides the first evidence that religion has a crucial impact on financial development and structure by affecting social trust.
The second chapter presents the first comprehensive analysis of the role of national religiosity in corporate innovation. We divide religiosity into five dimensions: ideological, ritualistic, experiential, intellectual, and consequential. For 1,506 firms in 27 countries during the 2012–2014 period, we find that the ideological and ritualistic dimensions promote corporate innovation, whereas the experiential, intellectual, and consequential dimensions hinder corporate innovation. Furthermore, religiosity overall has a positive impact on corporate innovation. Finally, we show that the positive effect of religiosity is more pronounced for firms in Judeo-Christian countries. Overall, we provide the first guideline to understand the diverse and comprehensive effects of religion on corporate innovation.
The third chapter presents the impact of religion on the quality of corporate disclosure, focusing on the role of social trust. Using country-level data on religion and disclosure quality from 38 countries, we find that general religiosity is negatively related to both voluntary and mandatory corporate disclosure qualities. Moreover, by dividing religiosity into two groups according to the hierarchy of religions, we find that these negative relationships are more pronounced for non-hierarchical religions. Finally, we show that religious heterogeneity is positively associated with both disclosure qualities. Overall, our findings suggest a novel channel – social trust – through which national religious characteristics affect corporate disclosure quality.
본 학위논문은 종교와 금융에 관한 세 편의 실증연구로 구성되어 있다. 첫 번째 연구는 종교가 국가의 금융발전 및 금융구조에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴본다. 1996년부터 2015년까지 46개국을 대상으로, 본 연구는 종교성은 금융발전을 증진시키고 시장중심의 금융구조를 갖도록 하는 반면, 종교적 계층성 및 중간수준의 종교적 다양성은 금융발전을 저해시키고 은행중심의 금융구조를 갖도록 함을 밝힌다. 나아가, 이러한 종교적 영향력은 계약환경이 열악한 국가일수록 더 두드러짐을 보였으며, 이 결과는 사회적 신뢰가 열악한 계약환경을 개선시킨다는 기존의 발견과 일맥상통한다. 종합하면, 본 연구는 종교가 사회적 신뢰에 영향을 미침으로써 금융발전 및 구조에 지대한 영향을 준다는 시사점을 제공한다.
두 번째 연구는 종교가 기업의 혁신성에 미치는 포괄적 영향에 대해 살펴본다. 종교성을 관념적, 의식적, 경험적, 지식적, 결과적 차원의 5가지 종교성 차원으로 분류하여 분석을 진행한다. 2012년부터 2014년까지 27개국에 위치하는 1,506개 기업을 대상으로, 본 연구는 관념적, 의식적 차원은 기업혁신에 긍정적인 영향을 미치나 경험적, 지식적, 결과적 차원은 기업혁신에 부정적인 영향을 주는 것을 발견한다. 또한, 다섯 차원을 모두 포괄하는 포괄적 종교성은 기업혁신에 긍정적인 영향을 줌을 보인다. 마지막으로, 이러한 종교성의 영향력은 유대기독국가에서 더 긍정적인 방향으로 작용함을 밝힌다. 종합하면, 본 연구는 종교가 기업혁신에 미치는 다양하고 포괄적인 영향의 이해에 대한 지침 역할을 한다.
세 번째 연구는 종교가 기업공시의 질에 미치는 영향을 사회적 신뢰 채널에 초점을 두어 살펴본다. 38개국의 종교 및 기업공시 자료를 토대로, 종교성이 자발적, 의무적 기업공시의 질과 음의 관계가 있음을 보인다. 또한, 종교성을 종교적 계층성에 따라 두 집단으로 나눠 살펴본 결과 종교성의 부정적인 영향력은 비계층적 종교일수록 더 두드러짐을 확인한다. 마지막으로, 종교적 다양성은 자발적, 의무적 기업공시의 질과 모두 양의 상관관계를 가진다. 종합하면, 본 연구는 국가의 종교적 특성들이 "사회적 신뢰" 채널을 통해 기업공시의 질에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 시사한다.
