Injector nozzle parameters (orifice diameter and hole number) play a big role in the formation of an air-fuel mixture, and improving the formation of the air-fuel mixture is directly related to improving the combustion and emissions. Therefore, in this study, the effects of orifice diameter and hole number on emissions in diesel engine were investigated under the representative low-load condition (IMEP 5.35 bar/1500rpm, IMEP 7.35bar/1700rpm). Decreasing orifice diameter can bring better fuel atomization and increasing hole number can bring a higher fuel flow rate, so exhaust characteristics can be improved with changing injector nozzle parameters. However, decreasing orifice diameter can aggravate air-fuel mixing by shorter penetration and increasing nozzle number can cause spray-to-spray interference. Therefore, the engine experiment was conducted to confirm the effects of injector nozzle parameters on exhaust characteristics in this study. For this purpose, two 117$\mu$m (orifice diameter) injectors and three 110$\mu$m injectors, with different nozzle numbers, were examined. As a result, the spray atomization was improved with the decrease of the orifice diameter (117$\mu$m→110$\mu$m), and the exhaust characteristics were improved. Next, as the result of changing the hole number, the injector of the orifice diameter of 117$\mu$m showed that the exhaust characteristics were improved with the increase of the hole number. However, the orifice diameter of 110$\mu$m showed the opposite result that the exhaust characteristics deteriorated with the increase of the hole number. The cause of this result was expected to be spray-to-spray interference, and flame visualization experiments were conducted to identify the reason in a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC). Two kinds of flame visualization experiments (OH chemiluminescence and soot incandescence by flame overlap) were conducted. First, the lift-off length was compared by measuring the OH radical generation position. The results showed that spray atomization was improved with a decrease of the orifice diameter, resulting in a decrease in lift-off length. Next, as the result of changing the hole number, the lift-off length was decreased with the increase of the hole number at both orifice diameters of 117$\mu$m and 110$\mu$m. Therefore, we can confirm that the air entrancement could be aggravated with the increase of the hole number due to the decrease of the injection speed. Next, the result of comparing the flame luminosity showed the same tendency with the result of the engine experiment. Through these results, it was confirmed that the positive effects and the negative effects were coexisted according to changing the injector nozzle parameters have. In this thesis, the effects of the orifice diameter and hole number were investigated through engine tests under low load operating conditions, and the scientific evidence was presented through flame visualization experiments.
