In recent years, decreasing $CO_2$ emission has been a global rising issue. Solid oxide fuel cell, in this situation, appear to be an eco-friendly and effective solution. Solid oxide fuel cell has relatively high efficiency since it operates at high temperature. Furthermore, solid oxide fuel cell doesn’t need any noble metal as a catalyst because of its fuel flexibility. On the other hand, solid oxide fuel cell has limitations of weak thermal and mechanical durability so that it is mainly used as a stationary generating system. Many researchers have been trying to supplement the limitations of the solid oxide fuel cell and use it for portable power generation system. Metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell is one of those candidates. Since metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell changes its substrate from ceramic to metal, it could get better thermal and mechanical tolerance.
This study aims to analyze the anode ohmic resistance and improve the performance of metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell which is developed by prior research at KAIST. Neglecting the ohmic resistance of the metal support, metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell developed at KAIST consists of three layers: crofer oxide layer which is formed on the surface of the metal support (Crofer 22 APU), oxidation protective layer and anode functional layer which are made of $La_{0.2}Sr_{0.8}TiO_2 – Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{1.95}$ composites. In general, in order to separate the ohmic resistance of each layer, the ohmic resistance is measured by sintering the hardened specimen by applying pressure to each powder, but the developed process cannot use this method because of the process characteristics.
Therefore, the ohmic resistance analysis technique for developed metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell was needed. In this study, the ohmic resistance was measured by fabricating cells coated with the same coating material with different thickness on the same support. In this way, it is expected that the ohmic resistance of the coating material can be separated by using the linear relationship between the thickness of the coated material and the ohmic resistance, and further, the interface resistance can be measured.
For this purpose, the basic research on the Crofer oxide layer was first conducted to confirm that the thickness of the Crofer oxide layer was not related to the thickness of the oxidation protective layer coating or the sintering time. In addition, the ohmic resistances of the oxidation protective layer and the Crofer oxide layer could be separated by measuring the ohmic resistances of the cells coated with different thicknesses of the oxidation protective layer on the metal support. The oxidation protective layer had electrical conductivity of 0.0777 S/cm, 0.0556 S/cm, 0.0349 S/cm and 0.0184 S/cm at $800^\circ C$, $750^\circ C$, $700^\circ C$ and $650^\circ C$, respectively. In addition, the Crofer oxide layer had ohmic resistance of about 0.03 to 0.05 $\Omega \cdot cm^2$.
