Korean universities are asked to undergo restructuring with the downturn in birth rate and school-age population. In particular, the rise of the 4th industrial revolution and advances in digital technology have positioned these universities at a crossroad. Furthermore, as the polarization of metropolitan and local universities raises questions about their substantiality, Korean universities need a new paradigm of education.
Consumertopia refers to a system in which demand determines supply, which translates to a consumer paradise. As market power shifts from supplier to consumer, the future of education also needs to be approached from a student’s perspective.
This paper looks at the future of local Korean universities in 2034. The survey was conducted on students who are consumers of education and related elements were: 1) Space 2) Professors and Students 3) Learning 4) Operational aspects.
Four key drivers were: 1) Classes through virtual reality technologies 2) Personalized lectures using artificial intelligence and big data 3) Project-based / problem-based learning 4) The university's degree is transformed into a micro degree. 5 ) Offline lectures are converted to online lectures such as MOOC.
Based on these elements, scenarios were carried out based on ‘Alternative Futures’ by James Dator. The first future was 'Sustainable Growth: Internationalization Scenario Through Virtual Reality Technologies', the second was 'Collapse: Practical Living Scenario Through Micro-Degree', the third future was 'Discipline: Community Scenario Through Project Based Learning', and the fourth future was presented as 'Transformation: A New Humanities University Scenario Through AI Avatar'.
Ultimately, the key drivers in this study were set from the student’s perspective with the aim to identify the various future scenarios of local universities in Korea.
저출산과 학령인구의 감소로 대학은 구조조정을 요구받고 4차 산업혁명으로 대학들의 경쟁이 세계적으로 확대되고 있다. 특히 수도권 대학과 지방대학의 양극화로 인하여 그 지속가능성에 대한 의문도 제기되고 있는 상황에서 한국의 대학들은 새로운 교육의 패러다임이 필요한 때가 되었다. 컨슈머토피아는 소비자의 천국이라는 의미로 수요가 공급을 결정하는 시스템을 말한다. 시장의 권력이 공급자에서 수요자로 넘어가는 이 때에, 교육의 미래 역시 수요자인 학생의 사고에서 접근해야 할 필요성이 있겠다.
본 연구에서는 2034년 한국의 지방에 있는 일반 4년제 대학(지방대)의 미래를 1) 수업공간 2) 교수와 학생 3) 학습 4) 운영의 측면에서 관련요소들을 살펴보고, 교육의 수요자인 지방대 학생들을 대상으로 설문을 진행하여 핵심동인을 추출하고자 했다. 그 결과, 1) VR, AR 등 가상현실기술을 통한 수업 2) 인공지능과 빅데이터를 활용한 개인 맞춤형 강의 3) 프로젝트 기반/문제 기반 학습 4) 대학의 학위가 기술/능력 중심의 마이크로 학위로 전환, 5) 오프라인 강의가 MOOC등 온라인 강의로 전환의 다섯 가지 핵심 동인이 선정되었으며, 이를 바탕으로 짐데이터의 네 가지 대안적 미래 시나리오로 시나리오플래닝을 하였다. 첫 번째 미래는 ‘지속성장: 몰입기술을 통한 국제화 시나리오’, 두 번째 미래는 ‘붕괴: 마이크로 학위를 통한 실무생존형 강의 시나리오’, 세 번째 미래는 ‘통제: 프로젝트 수업을 통한 지역 공동체 시나리오’, 네 번째 미래는 ‘변형: 인공지능 아바타를 통한 신인류 대학 시나리오’로 제시되었다.
이 연구를 통해 교육의 수요자인 학생들을 중심으로 핵심동인을 설정하였으며, 또 미래 시나리오를 통해 다양한 관점에서 한국의 지방대학의 미래를 살펴보았다는 데 의의가 있다.
