The prior literature has shown that financial leverage has various effects on firm valuation. Financial leverage generates conflicting growth signals and distress signals, which are reflected in firm valuation. Given that the effects of the financial leverage acts contrary to the firm valuation, this study confirms how these polysemous signals work and indicate that the financial leverage has a non-monotonic effect on the firm valuation. This study also shows that marketing activities can be implemented strategically to alleviate these polysemous signals of liability. Marketing activities are costly corporate activities, which may be a burden for firms, but they are rewarded in terms of firm valuation. In conclusion, marketing activities can increase firm valuation by enhancing growth signals sent by financial leverage and weakening distress signals. This study reveals the effect of alleviating U-linear relationships through marketing activities between financial leverage and Tobin's Q in the KOSPI market.
