The sustainability issue is becoming increasingly important as an essential factor for firms to create long-term value and competitive advantages. In this dissertation, I analyze the issue related to the firm's sustainability in terms of economic and environmental performance. The first study examines the relationship between a firm's environmental expenditures and profitability. In addition, I investigate whether firm's research and development costs affect the relationship between two variables. In the second study, I analyze the actual impact of emission trading scheme on firm’s carbon dioxide emission reduction. Furthermore, I examine the impact of firm's investment in research and development on carbon dioxide emission reduction. Additionally, I also analyze the effect of participation in the emission trading scheme on the economic performance of firms.
지속 가능성은 기업이 경쟁 우위를 확보하고 장기적인 가치를 창출하는 데 필수적인 요소로써, 갈수록 그 중요성이 커지고 있다. 본 학위 논문에서는 기업의 지속가능성과 관련 된 문제를 경제적 성과, 환경적 성과 측면에서 분석해보았다. 첫 번째 장에서는 기업의 환경 비용과 기업의 수익성 사이의 관계를 살펴보고, 더 나아가 연구 개발 비용이 두 변수 사이의 관계에 영향을 미치는지 알아보았다. 두 번째 장에서는 배출권 거래제가 기업의 이산화탄소 감축에 미치는 실질적 영향을 살펴보았고, 이에 더해 연구 개발에 대한 투자와 이산화탄소 감축 사이의 관계를 알아보았다. 또한 배출권 거래제 참여가 기업들의 환경적 성과를 넘어 경제적 성과에 미치는 영향에 대해서도 분석해보았다.
