The long-term reliability of thermoelectric generators is closely related to the interface state between electrodes and thermoelectric legs. The hot-side temperature increases the contact resistance due to interfacial cracks, inter-diffusion, and IMCs formation, and eventually decrease the output of the device. To solve these problems, a metallization process is required to fabricate a metallization structure by inserting a metal diffusion barrier between electrodes and thermoelectric legs. Metallization of thermoelectric materials has been studied in various groups.
In this thesis, the $Co_{0.6}Mo_{0.4}$ / n-type skutterudite (SKD-N) metallization structure using a mixed powder layer of Co and Mo was developed to improve the reliability of SKD-based thermoelectric generators. The $Co_{0.6}Mo_{0.4}$ / SKD-N structure showed inter-diffusion length and specific contact resistivity decreased by 77% and 81%, respectively, compared with the conventional titanium structure (Ti / SKD-N) after 100 hours of thermal aging at $550^circ C$. Based on these results, the lifetime of the $Co_{0.6}Mo_{0.4}$ / SKD-N structure was calculated to be about 5 years, which is improved results compared to Ti / SKD-N (12 days). In addition, it was confirmed that when the thermoelectric generators with the $Co_{0.6}Mo_{0.4}$ / SKD-N structure was fabricated and the thermal cycle reliability test was measured, the device maintained the output of 85% or more of the initial output.
