Recently, Community design has been highlighted to effectively solve local problems and sustain its solutions. Community design includes not only design for physical environment but also design for public participation and relationship building. It aims to integrate local knowledge into neighborhoods by the locals' engagement. Especially, merchants are regarded as possible local experts because they can acquire abundant local knowledge and willing to do. In this context, this study aims to enable designers to utilize merchants' local knowledge in community design by establishing the typology of local knowledge handlers and merchants' roles.
The study defined the key research concepts and it emphasized the significance of merchants and their local knowledge based on the literature review. Then, the study established the conceptual framework of the 'journey of local knowledge'. Through content analysis on the conceptual framework and 30 practical cases, the 'typology of local knowledge handlers' were identified, which shows how each stakeholder deals with local knowledge within community design projects. By utilizing this typology, four types of merchant's role were proposed through designer workshop and interview focused on the practical case in Daejeon. Further, merchants' motivation and constraints were identified through expert interview, and the study discussed the community design strategy for utilizing local merchant's knowledge more effectively.
The significance of this study is in that it provides implications for practical designers and researchers to devise design interventions to engage local merchants in community design.
나날이 복잡해지는 지역의 문제를 효과적으로 해결하고 이를 지속 가능하도록 하기 위해 커뮤니티 디자인이 주목받고 있다. 커뮤니티 디자인은 물리적인 환경 개선에서부터, 주민의 역량 강화, 주민 간의 관계 만들기를 포함하는 개념으로, 지역 주민의 적극적인 참여를 통해 지역 지식을 지역에 통합하는 것을 목표로 한다. 지역 주민 중에서도 상인은 풍부한 지역 지식을 보유하고 있으며 지역 지식을 수집하고자 하는 의지도 뛰어나기에 지역 전문가로서의 높은 가능성을 지니고 있다. 본 학위 연구는 현장 중심으로 발달한 커뮤니티 디자인을 지역 지식의 관점에서 보다 더 체계적이고 전략적으로 접근하기 위해, 다양한 이해관계자가 지역 지식을 활용하는 유형을 파악하고 특히 지역 상인이 수행할 수 있는 역할 유형을 구축하는 것을 목표로 한다.
본 연구는 문헌 조사를 통해 연구의 핵심 개념인 ‘커뮤니티 디자인’과 ‘지역 지식’의 개념과 범위를 정의하였다. 이어서, 문헌 조사 및 상인 대상의 그룹 인터뷰를 실시하여, 커뮤니티 내 상인 참여의 필요성 및 가치를 규명하였다. 이후 문헌 조사를 통해 ‘지역 지식의 여정’에 대한 개념적 프레임워크를 수립하고, 이를 활용하여 30가지 커뮤니티 디자인 실사례에 대해 내용 분석을 실시하여 ‘지역 지식 활용 유형 체계 (Typology of local knowledge handlers)’를 구축하였다. 이를 바탕으로 대전광역시 유성구 어은동의 주민 주도 축제인 ‘안녕 축제’ 사례에 대해 디자이너 워크샵 및 기획자 인터뷰를 수행하여 커뮤니티 디자인에서 지역 지식을 효과적으로 활용하기 위한 상인의 역할 네 가지를 구축하였다. 네 가지 역할에 대해 전문가 인터뷰를 실시하여 상인의 참여 동기 및 제약 요소를 추출하고, 이를 기반으로 상인의 지역 지식을 효과적으로 활용하기 위한 커뮤니티 디자인 전략을 논의하였다.
본 연구를 통해, 실무의 커뮤니티 디자이너는 상인의 적극적인 참여가 요구되는 커뮤니티 디자인 프로젝트에서 지역 지식을 보다 더 효과적으로 활용할 수 있으며, 나아가 상인을 참여시키기 위한 디자인 개입 장치를 개발하기 위한 연구에 시사점을 줄 수 있는 이론적 기초가 될 수 있기를 기대한다.
