Based on the Pohang Earthquake in 2017, this study tried to verify the effect of news media reports and social media disaster reports on the mental damage of residents in the affected area. The hypotheses were established by the theoretical basis that people's media dependency increased in disaster situations. Experimental stimuli that manipulated news media versus social media were produced and the experiment was conducted. The results of this study are as follows: First, the more news search behaviors at the time of the Pohang earthquake, the more anxiety experience increased. Second, about news media and social media’s reports for predictions about earthquakes, people felt the impact of event more on news media reports than on social media. Third, the impact of event on the media was greater when the degree of an individual's media dependency was greater. Based on the results of the analysis, this study aims to provide implications for indiscreet disaster reporting of media, and concludes the paper with suggestions for future research.
본 연구는 2017년 발생한 포항지진 사건을 바탕으로, 언론 보도와 소셜미디어의 재난 보도가 피해 지역 주민의 정신적 피해에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 실증적 검증을 진행하고자 하였다. 이에 재난 상황에서 사람들의 미디어 의존도가 높아진다는 이론적 근거를 뒷받침하여 가설을 세우고 실험 자극물을 제작하여 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 포항지진 발생 당시 뉴스검색을 많이 할수록 불안감 경험은 증가하였다. 둘째, 언론사의 지진 예측 보도와 소셜미디어의 지진 예측 보도에 대해, 사람들은 언론사 보도물에 대한 사건충격을 더 크게 느꼈다. 셋째, 보도를 접한 뒤 느낀 사건충격은 개인의 미디어 의존도 성향이 더 클수록 더 크게 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 분석결과를 바탕으로 언론의 무분별한 재난 관련 보도에 대한 시사점을 제공하고자 하였으며, 향후 연구에 대한 제언으로 논문을 마무리하였다.
