This dissertation aims to study a rotational scanning method for nondestructive inspection of thick and curved composite structures based on laser ultrasonic. The rotational scanning method can solve the low signal-to-noise ratio problem induced by changes of stand-off distance and incidence angle between sensing laser and target structure when inspect a curved structure using laser generated bulk wave. Most of the curved surfaces are actually in the form of a complete circle or a part of circle. Based on the
geometric properties of the circle, all points of a circle have same distance from the center and tangential lines are perpendicular to the center, the rotational scanning method rotates the target structure around the center of curvature, and it makes possible to keep fully focused state and normal incidence throughout the curved inspection area.
The rotational scanning method was applied to the right-angle rounded corner section of a composite primary structure and the composite pressure vessel of a space launcher. In the inspection of right-angled round corner section, all artificial defects were detected and it was found that the same size of defects were detected differently according to their depth from the inspection surface. It was proven that this phenomenon was caused by the radial travel path of ultrasound waves owing to the rotational scanning. An inspection system for composite pressure vessels was set up based on the rotational scanning method. The system detected the defects induced by impact damages, and filament wound direction was also clearly observed. The inspection result was compared with the previous inspection result using guided wave laser ultrasonic system, and the comparison result showed that the previous inspection result underestimated the defect size. From these application results, it can be concluded that the rotational scanning method is a reliable method which can precisely inspect thick and curved composite structures.
