Supersonic jet flows induced from a launch vehicle, fighter or civil aircraft can generate high level of noise by their severe unsteady behavior. Since the intensity of jet noise is strong enough, its influence on environment has been one of the important issues, and even it can work as critical failure of an electronic system or as a fatigue factor to aircraft structures.
In this study, a new high-resolution shock-capturing scheme is proposed to simulate the supersonic jet noise with robustness and high-accuracy. On the well-known monotonicity-preserving scheme framework, we propose the fifth-order optimized interpolation to improve the resolution performance of the original scheme. In addition, we investigate the influence of constraints (limiter) on the accuracy of a high-wavenumber solution, and improve its restriction by applying the additional modified constraints. On the other hand, the monotonicity-preserving scheme has a numerical problem under very low density and pressure conditions which result both in the negative values. To solve this non-physical problem, but to preserve the overall accuracy, a hybrid flux method of Roe- and LF-flux schemes is proposed and successfully adopted in the present high-resolution scheme.
Using the proposed scheme, three-dimensional supersonic jet noise simulations are carried out. For the near-field, the direct calculation for unsteady flow and noise sources was performed with proper grid generations. To obtain acoustic pressure signal at far-field which implies that outside of the computational domain, the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation was solved with a permeable surface method.
Firstly, a cold jet of Mach number 2.23 of a single nozzle is calculated. As a result, shock-cells caused by the pressure difference between jet flow and ambient are clearly captured. The turbulence induced by the jet shear layer can be well resolved too. The interaction of shock-cell and turbulence generates the shock-associated noise which is dominant on a wide range of noise spectrum. By comparing the experimental and numerical data, it is confirmed that the present scheme gives more accurate results than the other numerical schemes, with the same number of grids and even coarser grids. In addition, a hot jet of Mach number 1.56 of a single nozzle is calculated, and the results using both fine and coarse grids also confirm that the noise spectrums are in good agreement with the experimental data. Such advantage in terms of prediction for broadband noise comes from the high-resolution characteristics of the proposed scheme.
Secondly, we carry out a twin jet noise simulation. In the case of the twin jet, one of the main issues is the screech-tone caused by feedback mechanism of jet flow and acoustic wave. The proposed scheme is adopted to simulate twin jet of Mach number 1.358, and it accurately interprets the interference between the flow induced from two nozzles, thereby successfully predicting the strong screech tone as well as broadband noise. In addition, the numerical studies on nozzle distances and temperature effects are carried out. When the distance between twin nozzles is increased, the coupling mode is changed resulting in the reduction of screech tone due to out of phase of acoustic waves. Furthermore, in the case of high temperature, the location of jet interference shifts to rear which makes the amplitude of screech tone weak. However, the frequency of tone is increased due to high-speed jet.
In summary, in this study, a robust and high-resolution shock-capturing scheme is proposed for supersonic jet noise prediction, and it has been applied on various jet nozzles and flow conditions such as low/high temperatures and single/twin jets and it confirms the performance and usability of the scheme. As for the future work, the proposed scheme will be applied for the more specific situation such as jet from the nozzle with noise-reduction shape.
