This study aims to measure near-field thermal radiation between hyperbolic metamaterials and design hyperbolic near-field thermophotovoltaic system with high performance. We first measure near-field thermal radiation between doped silicon plates separated by submicron gap using MEMS-based platform. Precise control over vacuum gap and measurement of heat transfer rate are now possible by improving the MEMS-based platform. With this MEMS-device-integrated platform, for the first time, enhanced near-field thermal radiation between hyperbolic metamaterials is experimentally validated. Further, it is shown that near-field thermal radiation can be manipulated by varying the filling ratio of nanostructures, or tuning the coupling of the surface polaritons within the structures. Based on the experimental results, to enhance the performance of low-temperature near-field thermophotovoltaic system operating at large vacuum gap distance, a monolayer of graphene and multilayered graphene are introduced on the thermophotovoltaic cell. By conducting performance analysis of graphene-assisted near-field thermophotovoltaic system, the pivotal criteria for enhancing performance are revealed, and finally, hyperbolic near-field thermophotovoltaic system is designed. Hyperbolic near-field thermophotovoltaic system with hyperbolic-metamaterial emitter and multilayered graphene is optimized to maximize the power output using genetic algorithm. It is found that coupling of surface plasmon polaritons inside the hyperbolic metamaterial and multilayered graphene increases the near-field thermal radiation and the performance of the near-field thermophotovotaic system at large vacuum gap distance.
