Polymer solar cells (PSCs) has great potential as next generation renewable energy source due to their appealing properties such as low cost, light weight, and mechanical flexibility. To date, bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer/fullerene devices have been widely studied. However, as compared with most inorganic photovoltaic devices, the low efficiency of PSCs is a pressing problem. Typically, PSC devices have the very thin active layer because the most of polymeric material has low carrier mobility and short exciton diffusion length. This thin active layer can lead to poor absorption of solar light resulting low power conversion efficiency. It is thus necessary to find a way to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs. Currently, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has received close attention as an alternative that offer effective light trapping for the thin active layer of PSCs. So, utilization of plasmonic effect for thin film PSCs is a very attractive solution to improve the PCE without changing the thickness of device’s active layer.
In this work, we propose three simple methods to improve the PCE of PSCs by applying SPR. The first method is applying Au nano rods (NRs) to PSCs to increase the fill factor (FF), and PCE of PSCs by using near infrared (NIR) wavelength, which is typically wasted in existing PSC devices. To apply the LSPR which occurs in the desired wavelength to PSCs, we used the Au NRs by inserting into the anodic buffer layer (ABL) of a PSCs. The insertion of Au NRs into the ABL increased the Jsc and FF values of plasmonic PSCs because the strong plasmon-exciton coupling induced by the Au NRs increases the population of hot excitons, increasing the probability of charge dissociation occurring. The increase in the hot exciton population also can reduce geminate recombination at the light-absorption layer, thereby enhancing the efficiency of plasmonic PSCs. The proposed plasmonic device enhances the PCE of P3HT-based PSCs from 5.68% to 6.38% and the PCE of PTB7-Th-based PSCs from 8.07% to 8.98%. The effect of the LSPR occurring in the NIR was confirmed by using the NIR cutoff filter and the FDTD simulation.
We also suggested second method to improve the efficiency of PSC using SPR by incorporating Ag nano prisms into the light-absorption layer. In order to incorporate the Ag nano prism into the light-absorption layer, the solvent of Ag nano prism has to be replaced with 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB). However, the solvent of the synthesized Ag nano prism solution is deionized water, meaning that it was necessary to change the solvent of the Ag nano prism to DCB. To change the solvent to DCB, the Ag nano prisms should be capped with polymer capping agent. Without a polymer capping, the Ag nano prism become aggregated and their optical properties are changed. In this report, we changed the solvent to DCB without particle aggregation by using polyvinylpirrolidone (PVP) as polymer capping agent. The Ag nano prisms act as subwavelength antenna and generate LSPR. Hence, a SPR-induced strongly localized electromagnetic field enhancement occurs in close proximity to the Ag nano prisms, causing the optical absorption in the light-absorption layer to increase and the efficiency of the PSC device to improve. The plasmonic device incorporating the Ag nano prisms enhances the PCE of PTB7-Th-based PSCs from 8.18% to 9.05%.
Lastly, we suggested a method to improve the efficiency of wearable PSCs using the LSPR effect by creating a nanostructured metal electrode without a complex fabrication process or an expensive fabrication process. To apply the LSPR to wearable PSCs, we fabricated the Ag rear electrode with hemispherical nanostructures on the textile substrate. The hemispherical nanostructures were simply fabricated by spin coating the blended solution of the silica nanoparticles and the ZnO precursor. After forming the hemispherical nanostructures, 100 nm-thick Ag was thermally evaporated as the rear electrode. Even after Ag deposition, the hemispherical nanostructures were maintained. There are two primary reasons for enhanced light absorption of the plasmonic wearable PSC with nanostructured Ag rear electrode. The LSPR of the nanostructured Ag electrode induced a localized enhanced electric field in the vicinity of the nanostructured Ag electrode and this highly enhanced local electric field can increase effective absorption cross-section. Also, the high-angle scattering at the nanostructured Ag electrode increases the effective optical path length in the light-absorption layer. These reasons have the potential to enhance the light absorption of the plasmonic wearable PSC. In this report, the reference device exhibited a PCE of 6.28 % and the plasmonic device with the nanostructured electrode exhibited a PCE of 7.37 %.
