Over the last few years, the molecular sensor industry has become larger and more research is being done on high-resolution molecular sensors to get more information. However, the single molecular sensors currently being studied are not sensitive to commercialized and have difficulty to make devices on a large scale. In order to solve these problems, this thesis analyze the theoretical methods for increasing the sensitivity, and propose a device which can be produced in a large scale and has a higher sensitivity than the previous studies.
First, the reason why conventional devices cannot be fabricated in large area is because they used physically patterned graphene structures to detect molecules. Physically patterned graphenes will inevitably lead to defects at the edges of the graphene, thereby reducing sensitivity. In addition, since the electron beam lithography process is a serial process, so it is difficult to parallelize it, making it impossible to manufacture a large area. Therefore, in this thesis, we propose a device that excites graphene plasmon without physical patterning of graphene using a periodic substrate fabricated through repetitive oxidation and etching processes.
Also, in order to solve the low sensitivity problem caused by low interaction between graphene plasmon and free space photon, we theoretically analyze the multiscale structures that greatly improves sensitivity through superposition of the resonance structures in section 2.1. In section 2.3, we propose a large scale multiscale structure based on the information analyzed in section 2.1 and calculate optimum conditions of the device. And finally, we show how the proposed device performs as a molecular sensor in section 3.
