Warfare has always been a topic of importance in discussing the future of mankind. Such importance led the academics to identify the fundamental causes and structural changes of wars. However, due to the complexity of wars, scholars face difficulties in defining wars. Adopting the notion of‘generation’from sociology theory, the ‘War Generation Theory’ was developed in the early 1990s. This leading theory takes comprehensive perspective in explaining the structural changes of war, and it has been developed until the early 2000s. Recently, this theory is criticized by scholars due to the inconsistencies and irrationality that it bears. Research on war generations in general, face many challenges mainly because of the failure to present with quantified explanations to prove war generations.
In this study, I analyzed the existence of war generation through quantitative approach. Through network analysis, I focused on the changes of network properties between nations(nodes) and war relations(links). In my war generation network, I found that each war generation has different network topology that are distinguishable from one another. Also, I found that each generation defined by Mannheim’s generation theory, can be represented by different purposes and the means of war through the changes in the centroid of the constituent countries.
전쟁은 인류의 미래를 논함에 있어서 자주 등장하는 매우 중요한 주제이다. 이 때문에 전쟁의 구조의 변화, 내면적 원인을 규명하기 위한 학계의 노력은 꾸준히 이어져 왔으나 복잡한 시스템으로 야기되는 전쟁을 정의하기에는 어려움이 많았다.
1990년대 초반 '세대'라는 사회학적 개념을 대입하여 포괄적인 시각에서 전쟁의 변화를 합리적으로 고찰한 '전쟁세대론'은 2000년 초반까지 전 세계의 높은 이론적 지지를 바탕으로 급격하게 성장해 왔다. 하지만 최근에 와서 일관적이고 합리적이지 못한 이론이라는 학계의 강한 비판을 받고 있는데 이의 근본적인 원인은 지금까지 전쟁세대론 연구에서는 그 어디서도 세대의 변화를 증명해줄 수 있는 정량 적인 데이터를 제시하지 못하고 있기 때문일 것이다.
이 논문에서는 과거 전쟁세대 이론의 찬반을 주장했던 학자들의 이론위주의 논쟁에서 벗어나 관련 연구로써는 처음으로 정량적인 기준에서 전쟁세대의 존재여부를 파악하였다. 이를 통해 국가(node)와 전쟁관계(link)가 만들어낸 전쟁네트워크 구조에서 복잡계 이론이 제시하는 다수의 topology가 시대에 따라 변화하며 세대변화를 만들었음을 발견하였고 구성 국가들의 중심성(Centroid) 변화는 Mannheim의 세대이론에 따라 새롭게 정립한 전쟁세대 논리 안에서 세대를 대표하는 전쟁목적과 수단을 제시하고 있음을 입증할 수 있었다.
