This study analyses the sovereign credit risk of Asian countries using the structural model that derives the sovereign credit spread. The optimal default policy and debt policy are endogenously determined by the model. The daily model-implied credit spread is estimated by two-stage maximum likelihood estimation using the daily stock market index of each countries. The estimated sovereign credit spread explains the variation of the observed sovereign credit spread considerably and has higher explanatory power since the model captures the nonlinear relation between the sovereign credit spread and the stock price. Additionally, the VIX index has an explanatory power for the sovereign credit spread.
