Recently, with the rapid development of high-performance electronic devices, electric vehicles and smart grids, the demand for the development of high-performance energy storage devices is rapidly increasing. These applications require next-generation energy storage devices that are superior in all aspects, such as high capacity, fast charge-discharge, and long cycle life. Currently, the most widely used energy storage device is a lithium-ion battery. However, conventional lithium-ion batteries require a long time for charge-discharge and have an inferior cycle life. This problem mainly induced by a structural inefficiency of conventional lithium-ion battery electrodes. Due to the structural inefficiency, the electrons and the ions are not efficiently transferred. On the other hand, the mechanical stress could not be relieved during the charge-discharge process, thus resulted in the deformation and fracture of the electrodes, which adversely affects the capacity, charge-discharge rate and lifetime.
In this thesis, we have focused on a high-performance energy storage device using highly conductive, nano-structured electrodes. We have developed new concept of nanostructure fabrication methods and analyzed its formation mechanism of the nanostructure. The final goal is to realize a high-performance energy storage devices closely approached to the performance standard of next-generation energy storage devices by combining and optimizing the nano-structured electrodes with various active materials of lithium-ion batteries or supercapacitors. To accomplish this goal, we developed the following three highly conductive nano-structured electrodes. First, nanoporous silver (np-Ag) was developed for a supercapacitor anode that can be charged at an extremely high-rate by using an np-Ag@iron oxide composite electrode. Secondly, we developed the copper nano palm-tree framework (Cu NPF) for a lithium-ion battery anode capable of high-capacity and high-rate charging by utilizing the Cu NPF@iron oxide composite electrode. Finally, we developed high-performance supercapacitor electrodes by fabricating carbon nanofibers containing macro-/meso-/micro-pore structures.
