Bioelectronic medicine is used to treat various diseases such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and complex regional pain syndrome by stimulating appropriate neurons and nerves electrically. Such bioelectronic medicine should satisfy stringent requirements in terms of form factor, device reliability, stimulation efficacy, patient safety, and power consumption. Conventional peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) circuits implemented using a high-voltage semiconductor process have a large form factor resulted from low-level integration. When implemented using a standard semiconductor process to overcome such limitation, the circuits suffer from poor device reliability, stimulation efficacy, and patient safety. This paper presents a new PNS circuit fabricated in a standard CMOS process, which achieves significantly improved performances – form factor, device reliability, stimulation efficacy, patient safety, and energy efficiency. The proposed circuit structure and design technique can be applied not only to the neural stimulation circuits but also to a wide range of high-voltage analog driver circuits.
