Polar code receives much attention because of its provably channel capacity-approaching property and explicit encoding and decoding structure. Several existing representative code-independent and SNR-independent approximation algorithms were not systematically analyzed and compared before for check node update even though have been employed many times for LDPC/Turbo Code/Polar Code. The thesis investigates rigorously the computational complexity, hardware cost and performance with respect to Jacobian-based and Log cosh–modified approximation algorithms employed on long Polar Code. Analysis and simulation show that Log cosh–modified algorithm achieves the best tradeoff for the stringent requirements of computational complexity, hardware cost and performance for check node update, while Jacobian-based approximation algorithms hold medium tradeoff even though they’re the most frequently used approaches.
