Non-aqueous electrolyte battery has some problems high flammability, toxic elements and high price. Many researchers suggest a number of methods in order to resolve problems of non-aqueous electrolyte and use of aqueous electrolyte has been widely known as the representative method. However, there is a capacity fading result from degradation of electrode surface in contact with aqueous electrolyte. Regarding degradation mechanism, a large number of studies have been proposed so as to improve battery capacity in aqueous system, yet researches concerning degradation of $LiCoO_2$ (LCO) has not been studied well. In this study, LCO commercially employed for battery cathode was used for observation of surface degradation in 0.5 M $Li_2$$SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte system. Besides, we demonstrate that disordering of cobalt cations and loss of oxygen anions are caused by reaction between LCO surface and aqueous electrolyte through atomic-level observation. We performed surface degradation reaction by immersing LCO single crystal in 0.5 M $Li_2$$SO_4$ solution for 24 hour at 40℃ and 0.5 M $Li_2$$SO_4$ solutions are purged by Ar or $O_2$ gas in order to control the oxygen saturation. From the LCO surface region immersed in Ar or $O_2$ purged solution, we could observe disordering of cobalt ion due to migration of cobalt ion to lithium ion site or tetrahedral site by using the HAADF/ABF-STEM (High angle annular dark field/Annular bright field scanning transmission electron microscopy) and lattice oxygen loss and reduction of cobalt ion is observed through the STEM-EELS (Scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy loss spectrum) analysis. Taken together, the lattice oxygen loss and reduction of cobalt ion on the surface of LCO lowers the energy required for cobalt ion to migrate to the lithium position and then cobalt ions are easily located on the lithium site. As a result, surface degradation happened by formation of rock-salt like structure formed on LCO surface due to disordering of cations.
