How should the surgical joints be designed to have enough payload? Surgical joints should be small to be able to enter through smaller incision, yet capable of large payload to tract organs simultaneously. However, as the diameter of the surgical joint decreases, the payload decreases exponentially. For this reason, small surgical joints have been used only in fields where a large payload is not required. In most fields, procedures and surgery are developing in the direction of minimally invasive, and study on payload of surgical joint in this trend are necessary and widely applicable to a variety of surgical fields.
The contents of the paper are as follows. In the beginning, general analysis and design guidelines for the payload of the surgical joints are presented. This provides an overview of the various types of surgical joints and their advantages and disadvantages. In the latter part of the paper, a new flexible endoscopic surgical robot called K-FLEX is developed and verified. In particular, the research is focused primarily on the development of both surgical arms and overtube. This was based on the guidelines and ideas presented earlier.
I hope that this study will help to select variables and get various ideas while designing surgical joints.
