With the $4^{th}$ industrial revolution, the amount of the data to process increases and it requires high data rate. However, the electrical interconnects which uses the copper wire has reached the limitations with the high power consumption and crosstalk. Optical interconnects with silicon photonics are regarded as promising candidates for the future network system to solve these problems. As the switch is a key component in optical link, the high performance and low cost is more in demand. In this thesis, we design and fabricate an ultracompact 1x2 thermo-optic switch based on a multimode interference coupler. Through the self-imaging theory and FDTD solutions, the performance of the optimized structure is verified. The switch is fabricated with CMOS-compatible, and the measured characteristic of the passive and active devices and the measurement result of operation speed are represented.
