In this thesis, I document that an application of a moving average(MA) strategy of technical analysis to value-weighted decile portfolis sorted by volatility, market size, book-to-market, and momentum generates investment portfolios that substantially outperform the buy-and-hold strategy in Korean stock market. The MA strategy has a greater average return as well as a lower variance compared to buy-and-hold strategy. The risk-adjusted abnormal returns of the MA strategy, relative to the capital asset pricing model(CAPM), the Fama-French 3-factor model and the Carhart 4-factor model, are economically and statistically significant. In addition, the risk-adjusted abnormal returns of MA strategy are also highly significant after considering alternative lag lengths, portfolio formation criterion, subperiods, alternative sample and transaction costs. Moreover, they cannot be explained by market timing ability, business cycles and default spread.
본 연구에서는 국내 주식시장을 대상으로 변동성, 규모, 장부가 대 시장가치비율 및 모멘텀 기준의 가치가중 10분위 포트폴리오를 구성하여, 기술적 분석의 하나인 이동평균 전략을 적용하였다. 이동평균 전략을 적용 시, 단순매입 후 보유 전략을 적용하는 경우에 비해 상당 수준 높은 평균수익률과 낮은 변동성을 보였으며, 자본자산가격결정모형, Fama-French의 3요인 모형, Carhart의 4요인 모형으로 산출한 위험조정 초과수익률은 경제적, 통계적으로 유의미한 값을 보였다. 또한, 이동평균 전략의 초과수익률은 시차, 포트폴리오 기준, 하위구간, 분석기업, 거래비용을 달리 적용하는 경우에도 여전히 유의미한 것으로 나타났으며, 마켓타이밍 능력, 경기순환, 부도위험 변수를 통해서도 설명되지 않았다.
