For the last decade, determinants of firm R&D are widely studied. In this study, I suggest two of these determinants, the CEO’s college major and second generation business, both of which have an effect on firm R&D intensity. This study tested these theories based on publicly traded Korean pharmaceutical companies. As it turns out, the CEO’s college major has a significant and positive effect on firm R&D intensity. There is no significant relationship between second generation business and firm R&D intensity. However, second generation business does have a negative moderation effect on the relationship between the CEO’s college major and firm R&D intensity.
