A corrosion fatigue strength database was developed using the data contained in a databook published by the Society of Materials Science, Japan.
366 corrosion fatigue S-N curves and 989 crack growth rate curves are contained in the database. Utilizing the database, effects of various factors, namely, the density of NaCl, frequency, stress ratio, potential control, the type of loading and yield strength on corrosion fatigue were investigated. One of important results obtained is that corrosion fatigue S-N curve of carbon steel in NaCl environment can be represented by a single curve, irrespective of the type of loading, frequency, species of carbon steel and even the density of NaCl. It means that the existence of NaCl, even if it is very small quantity, is crucial to corrosion fatigue of carbon steels. On the other hand, corrosion fatigue life of stainless steel is dependent on the density of NaCl. It was also found that the effect of potential control on corrosion fatigue was different between carbon steel and aluminum alloy.
