In the study of the silicone abrasion resistant coating prepared by the hydrolysis of a methyltrimethoxysilane in the presence of an acidic silica sol, dicyandiamide(DICY) was investigated to be functioned as a base catalyst and an adhesion promoter for an interfacial area between polycarbonate(PC) substrate and abrasion resistant coating(ARC). The remarkable interfacial bonding strength between PC substrate and ARC film was shown by building up of hydrogen bonding formed between silanol group of ARC and weak nitrogen bases and between carboxyl group of PC and primary amide. DICY during curing in the oven acts as weak nitrogen bases to silanol group and primary amide to carboxyl respectively for the formation of hydrogen bonding.
This ARC containing DICY as a catalyst had been an exellent shelf stability at room temperature and its physical properties such as adhesion to PC without primer pretreatment and abrasion resistance was confirmed.
