This Study suggests the contingency framework understanding the implementation of NMT and conducts empirical analysis using survey data. The main objectives of the thesis are as follows: (1) analyzing the relationship between adaptation requirements and organizational adaptation efforts. (2) analyzing the relationship between organizational adaptation efforts and implementation performance, and the moderating effect of the adaptation requirments. (3) analyzing the effectiveness of organizational adaptation efforts according to organization charateristics(organization size, technical capability, top management support). First, the adaptation requirements measures the degree of uncertainty associated with NMT implementation by examing (1) the novelty of specific new features and funtions, and (2) the required departure from established operting assumptions and organizational relationships. Second, organizational adaptation efforts are suggested to four modes of problem solving that organizations use in NMT implementation(preparatory search, functional overlap, integration with outside, comprehensive education & trainig). The data were collected from 52 NMT implementation projects of 45 machine tool, metal component firms. Correlation analysis, fisher's Z tests, were employed to test the hypotheses, and tow-way ANOVA, multiple regression analyses were conducted for futher analyses. Results indicate that (1) the measured characteristic of NMT(adaptation requirements) are positively related to organizational adpatation efforts, (2) intensive problem solving efforts(adaptation efforts) can significantly improve implementation outcome, (3) the four organizational problem solving activites(adaptation efforts) discussed here are not equally effective for all types of NMT, and (4) types, quality, and effectiveness of organizational adapatation efforts are not equally according to organizational chacteristics(organization size, technical capability, top management support). Implication and furture research directions are drawn for the management of NMT implementation and for fure research on NMT Implementation.
