In order to analyze the performance of ATM switches, network terminations, and cross-connect switches, including traffic control mechanisms, it is necessary to test them in real-time basis during their development phases. In this study, we propose ATM traffic generation mechanisms which can generate various kinds of single source traffic models and multiplexed streams. Using TMS320C40 DSP board, we generate the simple source traffic including CBR, POISSON, ON-OFF, IPP, MMPP, and AR model and 16 multiplexed streams of CBR, POISSON, ON-OFF, IPP models by the proposed mechanisms. This study can be utilized in the development of real-time ATM traffic generators.
