A method to find the optimal actuator locations for efficient modal control for the modes of interest is presented. The proposed approach relies on the certain quantitative measure of degree of controllability based on the controllability grammian. This measure is directly related to the control input energy used in regulation problem and can be applied to multiple input system.
Selection algorithm of optimal shaker positions for system identification is also given. This algorithm uses modal DOE(degree of excitation) for uniform excitation of modes being considered. Its effectiveness is verified by simulation and experiment of 2-D truss structure.
