Nowadays design has taken much interests in meaning of form, symbolic function and social-cultural function of products in order to modify and unconscious form or a meaningless form. This interests created a semantic approach to product which is willing to recognize the product as a communicational tool and emphasizes the impoance of the meanings of product. In this thesis, an approrach which considered the meanings of product and emothioanl aspect to a product was attempted. This thesis has three major contents. The first is that the meanings of product were classified into three types of meaning i.e. that of existential, funtional and formal meaning, and each types were again classified into symbolic aspect and indicated aspect. The second is that the model of product communication was proposed on the basis of two points of view : first products and users communicate by action of use, secondly designers and users own similar semantic enviroment to generate the product form effectively. The last is that semantics process was proposed on the basis of above-mentioned three types of meaning and the model of product communication. In semantic process, semantic concepts are selected by analysis of product information and a questionnarie, and realizable stage(realization) is proceeded to generate product form on the basis of semantic concepts. In this thesis, the process of perceiveing the semantic information was actually shown by applying itself to the practice. Through these semantic approaches to the product, it will be possible to appraciate the meanings of product systematically and produce the meaning form. Also it is expected for users to comprehend the product still better and use it more effectively. Finally, the approach to consider meanings of the product is a try that understand the product as a communication tool, improve the relationship between the products and users and responds to the emotional need of human. Therefore, the process which perceives and apply the meanings of product will be improved to modify an unconscious form or a meaningless form continually.
