The elevator group control systems are the control systems that manage systematically three or more elevators in order to assign a suitable elevator for the passenger's hall call. Most of the elevator group control systems use the hall call assignment method for elevator assignment. In the hall call assignment methodd, the area value which determines the load biases of elevators is a control parameter closely related to the transportation performance. This paper proposes a fuzzy model based method for determinating the area value in the hall call assignment method. The proposed method uses a two stage fuzzy model which is built by the study of area value properties and expert knowledge. The first stage determines the range of area value based on the passenger's traffic and the second stage determines the area value in consideration of performance requirements. The proposed method shows the more desirable results than the conventional method in the simulations that use real traffic data.
