The wavelet transform has recently received considerable attention in the context of image processing due to its flexibility in representing nonstationary image signals and its ability in adapting to human visual characteristics.
In this thesis, a new coding scheme that is appropriate to multiresolution signal decomposition, particularly to wavelet transform by the regular filters, is proposed. The proposed coding scheme uses effectively the statistical properties of each upper orientation band. That is, to encode the lowest lowpass band and upper orientation bands we use the bands' local activity of the same level and coding methods used in the conventional black-white image compression, respectively.
It is found that the proposed scheme provides better performance than similar other conventional schemes and JPEG baseline system.
